Runcam Split Review/First Look

The Runcam Split follows the popular, but unfortunately discontinued Runcam 3 and builds on the success of the Runcam FPV cameras, such as the Swift 2. Runcam have to be commended on how quickly they have turned around a new product after being forced to discontinue the Runcam 3. This rapid development and deployment of new technology is fantastic for the FPV drone community, as we regularly see innovations.

Runcam Split FPV and HD Camera

Unlike the GoPro Session clone, the Run cam Split isn’t a normal standalone camera. As you may have guessed from the name, the split comprises more than one piece. Rather than carrying a separate FPV camera and HD recording camera on your drone, you can now use the Run Cam Split to do both jobs! While the camera provides a standard 4:3 ratio to your VTX, the stackable PCB receives a 16:9 HD feed, which is recorded to an on-board SD card.

Runcam Split FPV and HD Camera video ratios

The Split is fantastic for anyone who likes to record HD video, but can see the benefit of not adding additional weight in the form of an expensive GoPro. Lighter drones are more agile and can fly for longer, so both racers and freestyle pilots will benefit from the upgrade. On top of this, while a normal HD recording cam would sit on top of your drone, messing up the centre of gravity, the PCB sits in your FC stack, nice and central. As an additional added benefit, the weight from the whole system is only 21g! This is great news for 3″ and 4″ drone pilots, who until now had no real option but to accept an analogue FPV recording, or a very heavy and unresponsive drone.

Runcam Split FPV and HD Camera lens and PCB mounting

With the popularity of all-in-one components, our FC stacks are getting cleaner and shorter, which leaves room for the PCB part of this system. Mounting the camera itself is easy, as it can utilise standard mounting brackets and comes with its own, if you need them.
